Springs Road vineyards were established in 1994 on a small sheep property off Springs Road in Cygnet River, about 7km West of Kingscote on Kangaroo Island. The vineyards were planted by well -known locals Roger and Kate Williams. The Springs Road property was originally owned by Kate’s father, a strict Christian who didn’t approve of alcohol, smoking or betting at the races! The vineyard is on a special site in a very special place. It has a unique combination of relatively low rainfall, low soil fertility and a moderate maritime climate which results in low yielding vines producing highly coloured and intensely flavoured wines. Soils – Vineyards are on predominantly sandy loam soils over limestone and marl (clay) with some patches of Bay of Biscay soils (black cracking clays), interspersed with some ironstone. WHY KANGAROO ISLAND? In 2016 the annual Battle of Bosworth end of vintage party wound up in Emu Bay on Kangaroo Island. They ate, drank, fished and played Cards against Humanity. A visit to Kingscote to stock up on groceries during the trip took Joch past Elder’s Real Estate. Once back in McLaren Vale, Joch began looking at Kangaroo Island real estate online, late at night armed with a glass of red wine. Two weeks later Joch and Louise visited a property located on Springs Road about 7km west of Kingscote which had some 21 acres of vineyards planted to Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Joch loved the site and both Joch and Louise were excited about its potential to grow and produce amazing wines. Our first KI vintage was 2017 and the excitement about these wines grows with every vintage. Check Awards & Accolades |
